Note that this is the first 2 lessons from a six lesson study previously posted on our site.
The work of the local church has often been described as being threefold:
- EVANGELISM: spreading the good news of Jesus Christ to the lost
- EDIFICATION: equipping the saints for ministry
- BENEVOLENCE: meeting the needs of destitute brethren
Why should the church evangelize? It is the will and the command of God. It is really that simple.
This study is designed to look into this closer. We will do that in six parts, and have included the notes for your below. Feel free to print them off and share them.
WHAT IS EVANGELISM – Lesson One
When trying to define what something is or is not it. Let’s begin with what Evangelism is not.
WHAT EVANGELISM IS NOT
- EVANGELISM IS NOT ORGANIZATIONAL RENEWAL, RECONSTRUCTION OR EVEN DE-CONSTRUCTION.
- EVANGELISM IS NOT INVITING PEOPLE TO CHURCH OR AN EVANGELISTIC EVENT.
- EVANGELISM IS NOT IMPOSING OUR WILL OR BELIEFS ON ANOTHER PERSON.
- EVANGELISM IS NOT PERSONAL TESTIMONY. Act 16:25
- EVANGELISM IS NOT HUMANITARIAN EFFORTS.
- EVANGELISM IS NOT DOING APOLOGETICS IN ORDER TO WIN AN ARGUMENT.
- EVANGELISM IS NOT THE RESULTS OF EVANGELISM.
- EVANGELISM IS NOT CHURCH PLANTING.
- EVANGELISM IS NOT PROSELYTING OTHER CHURCHES MEMBERS.
- EVANGELISM IS NOT HOSTING AN “EVANGELIST” WHO PREACHES A WEEKS WORTH OF SERVICES.
ILLUSTRATION (EXCITEMENT AND EVANGELISM ARE TWO DIFFERENT THINGS):
WHAT EVANGELISM IS
1Co 15:1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
Act 21:8 And the next day we that were of Paul’s company departed, and came unto Caesarea: and we entered into the house of Philip the evangelist, which was one of the seven; and abode with him.
the gospel is: “that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:”
Ro 10:9 -13
Mr 16:15 … Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
Mat 10:32 Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.
Mat 10:33 But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.
WHY WE SHOULD EVANGELIZE – LESSON TWO
CHRIST DIED FOR THE WORLD
THE WORLD WAS LOST
Ro 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
Ro 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
BUT GOD WANTED THE WORLD SAVED
Eze 22:30 And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none.
1Ti 2:3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; 4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.
2Pe 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
JESUS WAS THE FATHER’S REMEDY
Re 13:8 … the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.
He died in our stead.
Ro 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
THE FATHER THEN HAD AN EVEN GREATER REASON FOR EVANGELISM: JESUS CHRIST, HIS SON
1Jo 2:12 I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name’s sake.
Ac 10:43 To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.
Ac 13:38 Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins: 39 And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.
JESUS COMMANDED IT
Mt 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
Mr 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
Lu 14:23 … Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.
Ac 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
WE ARE ORDAINED TO BRING FORTH “MUCH FRUIT”
Joh 15:16 Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.
Ro 1:13 Now I would not have you ignorant, brethren, that oftentimes I purposed to come unto you, (but was let hitherto,) that I might have some fruit among you also, even as among other Gentiles.
III. LOVE REQUIRES IT
- LOVE IS SELF-SACRIFICING
1Jo 4:7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.
8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. 9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.
10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.
1Jo 3:16 Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.
According to Romans 5:8, Jesus laid His life down for us while we were yet sinners! Jesus also said in:
Joh 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
1Jo 3:17 But whoso hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?
18 My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.
Ga 6:10 As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.
But let’s take Matthew 25 into consideration:
Mt 25:34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:
35 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:
36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.
37 Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? 38 When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee?
39 Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?
40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
Lu 16:19 There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day:
20 And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores,
21 And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.
22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;
23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.
25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.
Jas 4:17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.
WE MUST EVANGELIZE TO KEEP PEOPLE OUT OF HELL
JESUS DID NOT WANT PEOPLE IN HELL
Joh 3:15 That whosoever believeth in him should not PERISH, but have eternal life.
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not PERISH, but have everlasting life.
17 For God sent not his Son into the world to CONDEMN the world; but that the world through him might be SAVED.
18 He that believeth on him is not CONDEMNED: but he that believeth not is CONDEMNED already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
B. THE RICH MAN DID NOT WANT HIS BROTHERS IN HELL
One moment in hell made the rich man think evangelistically.
Lu 16:27 Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father’s house:
28 For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.
29 Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.
30 And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent.
31 And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.
WE MUST EVANGELIZE BECAUSE CHRIST EVANGELIZED
Lu 19:10 For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.
1Pe 2:21 For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:
1Jo 2:6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.
1Co 2:16 For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.
The Psalmist said:
Ps 37:4 Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.
WE MUST EVANGELIZE BECAUSE IT IS A WISE THING TO DO
Pr 11:30 The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.
Jas 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
WE MUST EVANGELIZE SO THE PEOPLE MAY FIND THE LOVE AND FELLOWSHIP OF GOD
1Jo 1:3 That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.
